Feed the Birds

John and I put a bird feeder outside the dining room window to watch the birds as we eat together. These are hungry birds! We have to take some responsibility for this because we've been feeding them for some time. We've trained them to look there for food. When the feeder is empty there are a couple of birds who seem to sit near the window and draw our attention to the empty feeder. That's giving a lot of reasoning ability to these birds. I have to admit perhaps I am the one that is trained--by the birds! Feeding them is good and bad perhaps. We have eased their hunt for food, but have we thereby made them dependent on it?

Some times I think we are like these birds. We become accustomed to certain things and then we have this feeling of entitlement. You've known people like that, children and adults. These folk, and I dare say there is some of this in all of us, expect everything to be on their time, their way, their schedule. And when it doesn't happen we get noisy.

What if we practiced getting noisy for others? What if we saw our job in the world to be keenly alert and watching for ways we can get noisy for those who are left out, pushed out, talked out, turned away? It could change the world.
Let's go for it.
Watch now... and bring voice to the voiceless.

God abide
